The Living Theatre staged scriptless participatory performances built on revolutionary rungs.
Evidence
Paradise Now had no script. Rather, the piece was a series of “rungs” to revolution that functioned as a road map for an essentially improvised “social happening.” (The audience was handed a chart specifying the revolution’s stages.) During the opening Rite of Guerrilla Theater, members of the company circulated through the audience hissing or declaiming their complaints: “I cannot travel without my passport!” “I do not know how to stop wars!” “I cannot live without money!” “I am not allowed to smoke marijuana!” and, most provocatively, “I am not allowed to take off my clothes!” — J.
