The Living Theatre exiled itself from New York for four years touring Europe

Evidence

Since departing New York for London in the summer of 1964, the Living Theatre had led a nomadic existence. The troupe staged The Brig in East Berlin, toured West Germany, the Netherlands, Italy (where they played denizens of Sodom in John Huston’s production The Bible), and (mainly) France. At one point they were on their own when Julian Beck and Judith Malina returned to New York during the winter of 1964–65 to serve brief sentences on charges arising from their tax evasion case. — J.
