The law tolerates religious plural marriage only until it harms minors

Evidence

But, to this day, some religious groups just go too far. The FLDS Church, the largest fundamentalist Mormon denomination, has thousands of members, many of whom live in communities on the Utah-Arizona border. The church practices plural marriage; men take multiple wives. And this was tolerated, uneasily, for a time. All that ended, though, in the early 2000s when law enforcement began investigating, and eventually convict ing, many of the men in the church, including its leader Warren Jeffs, for various crimes involving sexual contact with minors. The law tolerates religious diversity, but only up to a point. — Lawrence M. Friedman and Grant M. Hayden, American Law, 1426
