The Hornacheros held substantial property worth over 85,000 escudos
Evidence
It so happens that there has survived an estimate of the value to the lands and other real estate belonging to the Moriscos there at this time. Dom´ınguez Ortiz and Vincent published it from a document in the Simancas archive (Consejo y Juntas de Hacienda 503). The numbers are clearly round ones: 1,000 dwellings are estimated as worth 30,000 escudos, and 10,000 fanegas of land have the same value, land under special cultivation (vines, etc.) are given as worth 41,000 escudos, 150 beehives are estimated at 8,000 escudos, and other items (dovecotes, mills), 6,800 escudos. As Dom´ınguez says, this is an underestimate, but it gives some idea of what the Hornacheros had at stake: a great deal. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1716
