The graves discovery suppressed public celebration of Canada Day in 2021
Evidence
The announcement about the graves happened in late May. Canada normally celebrates its national holiday on July 1, on the anniversary of its colonies forming a confederation. In 2021, with searches still underway, a sober consensus emerged that the usual prideful displays of red-and-white maple-leaf flags and fireworks were not appropriate, not this year. The capital city of British Columbia, Victoria, canceled Canada Day altogether. Other cities marked the day with Every Child Matters murals and official expressions of grief and contrition, including from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called on the country to “be honest with ourselves about our history.” Here on the coast where I live, the Canada Day crowd was a sea of orange, without a red-and-white flag in sight. — Naomi Klein, Doppelganger, 851
