The future is understood as subjectivity’s relation to the accidental
Evidence
Plasticity characterizes the relation between substance and accidents. Now the Greek word συµεηκς, ‘accident’, derives from the verb συµα νειν which means at the same time to follow from, to ensure and to arrive, to happen. Thereby it can designate continuation in both senses of the word, as consequence, that is, ‘what follows’ in the logical sense, and as event, that is, ‘what follows’ in a chronological sense. Self-determination is thus the relation of substance to that which happens. Following this line of thought we understand the ‘future’ in the philosophy of Hegel as the relation which subjectivity maintains with the accidental. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 248
Categorization
- DEFINE: Etymology of ‘accident’ fuses logical consequence with chronological event, collapsing the reader’s modernity-distinction line in one move.
- XREF: Mirrors the future-priority readings of Koyré and Kojève from ch12 and ch27; pays off the two-futures puzzle (chronological vs logical-conceptual) noted at ch27.
