The Frankfurt Institute subsidized Lazarsfeld’s Newark research group via contract work
Evidence
The university was small and poorly off, and the director of the research group was obliged to find half of his salary for himself. Lazarsfeld had to keep the research group going by finding research contracts, just as he had done in Vienna. In this situation, Horkheimer’s Institute came to his help by having part of its work carried out at the Newark research centre and paying Lazarsfeld’s small staff for supervisory duties. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 682
