The felt need to edify audiences suppressed accurate study of Muslim ritual

Evidence

Christian comparisons, such as the equation of the hours of the salat with those of the Christian Office, overshadowed every aspect, and there was no reasoned contrast between Christian and Muslim ritual over a large field. The entire subject brought no disgrace to Islam, led, indeed, often to praise of it; and it may well have seemed an unprofitable subject to pursue to mediaeval authors concerned both to edify and to educate their public. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 1205
