The economy has become synonymous with all social life including self-relations
Evidence
If the economy was once a means to the end of social reproduction, the two are one and the same today. By now, members of society are members of an economy which is synonymous with everything, even with the relationships of individuals to themselves and others. Hence, as mentioned above, friendliness exists under ‘a priori saleability’, where ‘the living has made itself, as something living, a thing, equipment’. ‘[F]rom genuine kindness to the hysterical fit of rage’, everything previously alive has become ‘capable of manipulation’ in order that that the gift which has nothing to do with own concept – something freely given with nothing gained in return (as Nietzsche claims, ‘we acquire no rights by making gifts’39) – will yield the return already implied in its giving. — Dirk Braunstein, Adorno’s Critique of Political Economy, 937
