The Dome of the Rock’s architecture and inscriptions declared Islam supersedes Judaism and Christianity
Evidence
An inscription says the Umayyad Caliph ‘Abd al-Malik built it in 692, although it is unclear whether this refers to the beginning or the completion of its construction. It is the first monument of Muslim architecture, built on the site of the second Jerusalem temple, which had been destroyed by Roman armies in 70 C.E. In rebuilding on the site of the temple associated with the ancient kings Solomon and David, the Umayyad caliphs laid claim to their heritage, source of legitimacy in the eyes of their subjects—Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. The choice of site made a powerful statement: Islam is here to stay; it continues and supersedes its predecessors, Judaism and Christianity. The inscriptions running along the exterior proclaim, in Koranic verses, the unity of God and the mission of his prophet Muhammad; the inscription on the interior, in contrast, contains all the Christological verses of the Koran, emphasizing Jesus’ role as a human prophet, asserting that God cannot have a son. On the temple mount of Jerusalem, a short walk from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the inscriptions on the Dome of the Rock clearly proclaim that Muslims are the true heirs to Jesus, not the Christians who have set him up as a God alongside the one true God. The mosque was “meant as a message of power to Christians, whose defeated rulers had their crowns hanging in the sanctuary.” A message perhaps all the more urgent in light of recent Muslim military defeats against Byzantium. — John V. - XREF: Connects to my interest in how material culture and architecture function as political-theological arguments; parallels the grafted site-layering theme in ‘Grafting & Growth’ where successive peoples build on inherited ground.
- QUESTION: Worth chasing: the timing claim that recent Muslim defeats by Byzantium made the message more urgent — how did the military-triumphalist framing interact with actual battlefield reversals?
