The counterculture identity was named by Theodore Roszak in The Nation

Evidence

Was the counterculture—newly named by California professor Theodore Roszak in a series of articles published by The Nation—feeling depressed? If so, things improved nine days later when militant African American students at Ginsberg’s alma mater Columbia University occupied Hamilton Hall to protest the university’s proposed expansion into Morningside Park. The next day, white students—led in part by the campus SDS—occupied Low Library. Soon they were joined by Tom Hayden and the Motherfuckers, who occupied the Mathematics Building, which, as Osha Neumann recalled, was “quickly turned into a reasonable facsimile of the Lower East Side crash pad.” — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 1228
