The Corpocene is emergent now, not dominant since the Industrial Revolution.

Evidence

Unlike almost everyone mentioned above, working to diagnose the dominant structures of the twentieth century guiding our present, we consider the Corpocene to be emergent today, not something that names the dominant order of modern social life since around the Industrial Revolution. While the historical precedents of the Corpocene were laid out through both industrial and, especially, imperial capitalism, the Capitalocene and the Plantationocene, we are only now entering the Corpocene, and we see moments of the beginning of this era when we trace the model of subject privileged in influencer culture. The Corpocene is an age in which the corporation and corporal form converge—a convergence even implied by the etymology of corporation, from the Latin corporare, a word that means “to combine into one body.” Our term is intended to foreground the reinvention of the human being, represented by Anthropos, through the logic of the corporation. The corporation collapses the differences between distinct “bodies.” — Grant Bollmer, Katherine Guinness, The Influencer Factory, 349

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Clarifies the temporal claim of the Corpocene — it is emerging today, unlike the Capitalocene and Plantationocene it builds on.
  • ADDENDUM: The etymological convergence of corporation from corporare, ‘to combine into one body,’ pairs naturally with the reader’s framing of the self-becoming-firm — usable in any of the three existing articles’ structural/metanarrative angles.
