The Churchill dam flooded nearly 5,700 square miles of Innu land

Evidence

What it left in Nitassinan was ecological disaster. Joey Smallwood will always be remembered for this. The so-called Churchill River is the largest river in the area, draining 29,900 square miles and providing an inland route for the Innu. Dammed before its monumental 300-foot plunge, the river now squeezes through several shafts and tunnels, leaving a mere trickle for the lakes and rivers below. The Smallwood Reservoir floods 5,698 square miles of central Nitassinan and is half the size of Lake Ontario. β€” Winona LaDuke, All Our Relations, 336
