The censorship crackdown drew other artists’ work into confiscation and prosecution
Evidence
Having issued a ringing Underground Manifesto on Censorship, Mekas next organized a Flaming Creatures defense benefit, screening Jean Genet’s 1950 short feature Un Chant d’Amour—a poetic evocation of homosexual fantasy in a French prison—at the Writers Stage Theatre, 83 East Fourth Street on Saturday, March 7. Also on the bill: Stephen Dwoskin’s short Newsreel of Two Underground Film Stars Having Breakfast in Bed, with Beverly Grant and her roommate Zelda Nelson. (It too would be confiscated.) — J.
