The Catholic doctrine of purgatory traces to 2 Maccabees
Evidence
The Catholic Encyclopedia says: “Purgatory is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God’s grace, have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.” In other words, it is a place where men and women go to be temporarily purged by fire for their sin. This Catholic doctrine comes from 2 Maccabees 12:41-46. — Chuck Missler, The Kingdom, Power and Glory, 478

- QUESTION: Purgatory’s scriptural sourcing is contested - 2 Maccabees being deuterocanonical means Protestant evangelicals dispute its authority entirely. Worth pursuing further.
