The Bleecker midnight series survived Flaming Creatures and ended only on a miscredited ad

Evidence

Although it is generally assumed that Flaming Creatures terminated “Midnights at the Bleecker,” the series continued for several more weeks. Monday, May 6, there was a program of new releases from the Film-Makers’ Cooperative. May 13, Stan Brakhage gave a lecture. Around this time Mekas left for the Cannes Film Festival, where his brother’s feature Hallelujah the Hills was screening as part of the Critics Week. Thus, he was not likely to have created the ad for May 20 show conjoining Brakhage’s 1956 Flesh of Morning with a program of Jerry Jofen’s work: that the Brakhage title was given as “Flush of Morning” and further described as “a film of masturbation” was likely the final straw and consequently the last film shown—if indeed it even was. — J.
