The Black Panther Party combined armed patrols with community service programs

Evidence

In response to police brutality against African Americans, Merritt College students Huey Newton and Bobby Seale create the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California, which monitors the actions of local law enforcement with armed citizen patrols. The organization, which J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI names as an enemy of the government, holds that ending the economic exploitation of Black people is central to achieving racial equity. It also operates free breakfast programs, medical clinics, and other community service programs. — Nikole Hannah-Jones et al., The 1619 Project, 1154
