The 2008 economic crisis triggered a massive surge in bartering in the U.S.

Evidence

Across the United States, the recent economic crisis has brought with it an explosion of bartering. According to The New York Times (March 21, 2010), Craigslist is now listing over 200,000 advertisements per month for bartered goods and services: “Consumers can use their time, skills and possessions instead of money to obtain goods and services like piano lessons, dental work, and dog training—and to meet new people along the way.” — Rebecca A.
