The 1919 chancellor demanded ruthless public-service cuts after the war
Evidence
In the summer of 1919 the chancellor complained loudly: “the number still employed in the public services have, in the aggregate, hardly decreased perceptively since the war. Th at cannot be defended… . Everything in excess of this must be ruthlessly cut down. In the interest of economy we must be willing to content ourselves with the second best where the best is too costly” (August 28, 1919, T 170/171, fol. 2). — Clara E. Mattei, The Capital Order, 948
