The 1797 French coup overturned planter political victories and revived abolitionism

Evidence

In September 1797 there was a political about-face in Paris. A coup d’état annulled the parliamentary elections that had brought Vaublanc and other planters into office. Laveaux soon took up his post, along with several representatives of African descent elected alongside him. Along with other supporters of emancipation in Paris, this group refounded the abolitionist Société des Amis de Noirs and began an energetic campaign to defend emancipation. — Dubois, Laurent, Avengers of the New World_ The Story of…, 739
