The 1502 pragmática converted Castile’s tolerated Mudejars into enforced converts
Evidence
The relevant new legislation is dated July 1501, in Granada, but it is perhaps possible that it was not made public on that date, and in any case its main force would not have been felt in Granada itself, where there were few Mudejars of the type affected. It was explicitly in the other kingdoms of the realm (“our kingdoms and lordships of Castile and Leon”) that the new provisions of July 1501 were intended to have their impact. And in these regions the key date was that of the actual proclamation of the pragm´atica, which does not seem to have taken place until February 12, 1502, in Seville. The dates of local proclamations and of implementation vary somewhat, as do the contents very slightly from place to place, but it would seem safe to treat this as one family of documents with one objective: that of changing the tolerated Muslims (Mudejars) of the medieval dispensation in the Christian kingdoms into the enforced converts of the early modern period. — L.
