Tempels addressed philosophy of religion through practice, not systematic treatise

Evidence

Tempels did not write any systematic treatise on African traditional religion comparable to those produced by many anthropologists or even missionaries, such as Burton. Likewise, he did not articulate any systematic philosophy of religion. And yet, his work as a whole addresses the issue of “De Vera Religione” and that of the encounter between Christianity and the Religion of the Baluba people in a way that is relevant to philosophy of religion. The translatability of Christianity in Bantu languages and spiritual worldview was so important for Tempels that he created an entirely new religious movement within the Roman Catholic Church, to the dismay of a great many missionaries and colonial agents. — Frans Dokman, Beyond Bantu Philosophy_…, 708

  • QUESTION: The claim that Tempels did philosophy of religion ‘in practice’ but never systematically invites asking what journals or notes exist that could be mined.
