Teaching in prison means teaching with the prison’s governing constraints
Evidence
The simple presence of teachers in a correctional facility can change the dynamic between people who are incarcerated and correctional officers as well as resonate beyond the classroom and into the cellblock, influencing the relationships between students and non-students. If we confront the fact that teaching in prison means teaching with the prison, it becomes clear that these governing constraints, while typically something we might address out loud and in the open in the context of school, have a palpable but silent influence on the prison-classroom. While critical pedagogies might seem like the most logical method for processing the realities of a prison-classroom, they may only exacerbate tensions. — James D. Kirylo (ed.), Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 402
