Teacher preparation gaps allow racism to reproduce through early childhood classrooms
Evidence
Racism frequently persists in schools because often preservice teachers, 85 percent White middle class, are not well prepared to work against it (Wynter-Hoyte, Muller, Bryan, Boutte, & Long, 2019), lack critical consciousness, and a habit of mind to see how racism permeates schools and society (Boutte, 2016; King, 1991). Racism is perpetuated as new teachers join colleagues not focused on equity in curriculum and instruction (Asante, 2017; Sleeter 2016), and not taught to interrupt racist trends and therefore pass racist ideologies to children in EC classrooms. — James D.
