Symbolic and physical violence reinforce each other as sovereign marking

Evidence

Price-Tag activities sear the consciousness of Palestinians with perpetual existential fear. Perhaps the most striking feature of the Price-Tag movement’s activity is the parallel between the marking of Palestinian spaces with anti-Arab threats and religious Jewish imagery and the more literal marking of Palestinian bodies through acts of physical violence. The two forms of violence – the symbolic and the real – maintain a mutually productive relationship. The constant interplay is central to the logic of the Price-Tag movement’s purification project. Without condemnation or repercussion, these symbolic acts transition fluidly to realities of loss and death. The Price-Tag threats, slogans, and destruction of property are themselves a reminder to Palestinians of the enduring possibility of death and eradication from the land. These actions reinforce the limitations placed on Palestinians within oEJ, regulating Palestinians to spaces or uninhabitable zones, where they constantly fear for their lives. — Nadim N.
