Supreme Court decisions are announced in open court according to fixed seniority conventions

Evidence

The Court announces its decisions in open court. Usually, the justice who wrote the opinion of the Court announces the decision, and justices who filed concurring or dissenting opinions may also state their views. When several decisions are handed down on the same day, the justices delivering the opinions of the Court do so in reverse order of seniority. In the past, justices used to read their full opinions from the bench, but time pressures have eliminated that practice. — G. Alan Tarr, Judicial Process and Judicial…, 1583
