Support personnel endure the strain of proximity to execution without power to prevent it
Evidence
Members of the support team also provide counseling and spiritual guidance to inmates while they are on death row. Their greatest supportive involvement with the inmates is on the day of the execution, “I spent time with him the day of the execution. As soon as I left my work, I went to him and stayed with him during the day. The only time I left was to eat lunch (Osofsky et al., 2005).” Some expressed frustration over how little they had to offer: “I’m in a helping profession, but there isn’t a damn thing I can do for these guys”. — Albert Bandura, Moral Disengagement, 2023
