Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere asked whether welfare-state industrial societies can be democratized
Evidence
The study thus showed an associate of the Institute attempting for the first time to present the
theoretical conception of society as a whole that would have room for the concept of public opinion' that had been proposed in the introduction to Group Experiment. It was also an attempt to give substantial theoretical content to Horkheimer and Adorno's formulas about theadministered world’ and about the way in which ever weaker individuals were being delivered into the hands of organizations. The practical interest that determined the study’s point of view could not be overlooked. Is it possible to democratize industrial societies that are based on the welfare state? That is one way of phrasing the question that lay at the heart of the study, which was subtitled `An Inquiry into a Category of Bourgeois Society’. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 2361
