Straight quotation marks are typographic blemishes with no excuse

Evidence

Quotation marks come in four flavors: double and single, opening and closing. On typewriters, a set of straight marks served for both opening and closing quotations (“…”), so the straight quotes used to be ubiquitous. Today, word processors can automatically use the correct curly marks known as smart quotes (“…”). There’s no excuse for still using the ugly straight quotes, which are typographic blemishes that don’t match any font. — Bryan A. Garner, Jeff Newman, Tiger Jackson, The Redbook, 60
