Status-driven dog breeding now overrides health in perceived beauty
Evidence
Once dogs became status symbols rather than practical companions, the need for differentiation incentivized humans to transform them into dozens of distinct categories. This origin story has been lost to time, and breed-conforming dogs simply came to be perceived as more beautiful. Mutts are healthier than purebreds, yet the very designation “mutt” implies something is wrong with them. Research conducted in the Czech Republic demonstrated that people are twice as likely to reclaim their lost purebred dog from a pound than their runaway mutt. — W. David Marx, Status and Culture, 803
