States with large Black populations soften their embrace of mestizaje

Evidence

This dispositional openness to mestizaje/mesticagem – abstractly to hybridity, mixture, and social metamorphosis; concretely to Euro-cultural extension and white domination – is more crimped in those states where African-descended people have constituted a significant presence, whether demographically or culturally (to some degree Costa Rica and Venezuela, as we have seen, but especially Colombia, and most notably Brazil and Cuba). Here, spatial marginalization and provincialization of black communities were complemented by a softer, more ambivalent insistence on mestizaje/ mesticagem. β€” David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1179
