Spring 1960 compressed global and local crises into one moment
Evidence
Spring 1960 had been filled with portents. In April, Communist youth groups from fifteen countries, including the United States, gathered in Havana to express their support for Fidel Castro’s fight against “Yankee imperialism.” On May Day the Soviet ground defenses shot down an American U2 spy plane, waiting nearly a week to make the news public. In the interim, a protest held in City Hall Park against the annual nation-wide civil defense drill resulted in twenty-six arrests. A group of Lower East Side teenagers took advantage of the deserted streets to rob a grocery store. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 166
