Specific loudness is better expressed against excitation level than against linear excitation

Evidence

The linear value of the excitation is rarely useful. We have seen that excitation level is much more effective and handier. Therefore, the relation between specific loudness, N’, and excitation level, L E , is outlined in Fig. 8.17. The parameter in the curves is the value LTQ - ao, which was chosen in order to exclude dependencies on frequency or critical-band rate. — Professor Dr.-Ing. Hugo Fastl, Professor Dr.-Ing. Categorization

  • DEFINE: Introduces the normalization parameter LTQ - a0 that (subtracting the free-field transmission factor) removes frequency and critical-band-rate dependency from loudness relations.
