Soundboards deliberately avoid isolated high-Q resonances
Evidence
The coupled oscillators are relevant to a host of musically important scenarios. Suppose a piano string sinusoidal partial has a frequency nearly resonant with a high Q soundboard vibration mode. (The vibrations/resonances of soundboards are considered in section 12.6.) Audible sound is generated only by the soundboard, so the loudness of the partial will wax and wane as energy flows from the string into soundboard and back again. It is not at all clear that such scintillation would be desirable. Except for very low frequencies, in section 12.6, we will discover that isolated high-Q resonances are absent in soundboards, for good reason. β Eric J. Heller, Why You Hear What You Hear- Anβ¦, 1021
