Slavery and Holocaust deaths are linked by racialized and denied death
Evidence
What links Haiti, as the figure of European slavery and of colonialism more broadly, to Auschwitz, then, is racially profiled, produced but also evaporated death. The death of Middle Passage a formative step on the path to the camps. Brutalization at the tip of the whip, the chicotte, the leather boot: Port au Prince, 1794, Leopoldville 1894, Auschwitz 1944. Racially entwined in conception and production, ends and effects. But death denied, refused, at both ends. And refused through race. Death dehumanized doesn’t add up. The slaughter of brutes reduces to the instrumentalities of labor replacement and body evaporation. How to find able bodies and how to rid itself of disabled ones. How to “factorize” labor and “fabricate corpses.” — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 845
Categorization
- DEEPTHINKING: The compression of Haiti and Auschwitz through ‘evaporated death’ — denied, dehumanized, instrumentalized killing — is the densest paradigm in the chapter, refusing any moral hierarchy while insisting on structural kinship.
- SEED: An essay connecting the analytic move here (death denied as a unifying technology of racial violence) to the current discourse of dehumanized victims in genocides — when does denial of death precede or enable mass killing?
