Slave manumission threatened the Christian indoctrination project

Evidence

There is obviously a conflict between the economic motives that might lead Christian owners to release their Morisco slaves at a good price and other quite different religious considerations. The purpose of the placement of Moriscos in Christian households and establishments in the first place had been to facilitate their indoctrination and assimilation. Manumission would probably be a prelude to the return of the slave to an Islamic environment, and so to Islam. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1151
