Single-number loudspeaker ratings mislead because real faults often have straightforward corrections
Evidence
Single-number ratings of various aspects of performance have been derived from spinorama data by some users, and these are appealing. However, they are simplistic interpretations and can mislead. It is easy to find examples of loudspeakers with low numerical ratings because of one correctable fault, such as limited bandwidth (add a subwoofer), a broadband spectral tilt (use tone controls) or a strong resonance (compensate with parametric equalization). Anechoic data reveals the problems and suggests solutions. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 229
