Simplification makes determinations both more and less universal, mourning what it suppresses

Evidence

At the same moment, the determination thus simplified exists as a type, an exemplar - mourning its individuality - and a particular essence - mourning its universality. To produce this ontological residue involves a double suppression and a double preservation. Suppression occurs through the work of habit, with its blunting and flattening effects, and through sacrifice, or alienation. Preservation has involved two forms of permanence: the virtuality created by reactualizing, and the singularity which, in its disappearance, has left itself behind as an interiorized trace: Even ā€˜to preserve’ includes a negative element, namely, that something is removed from its immediacy and so from an existence which is open to external influences, in order to preserve it. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 1058
