Silent Spring was reviled by conservatives yet later widely celebrated

Evidence

The conservative magazine Human Events bestowed on Silent Spring honorable mention in compiling its list of the “Ten Most Harmful Books” of the 19th and 20th centuries (Ten most harmful books, 2005). The scientific community and the general public thought otherwise. Silent Spring has appeared on dozens of lists of the best nonfiction books of the 20th century. The woman who was criticized as emotionally unfit to evaluate the effects of toxic chemicals received countless awards and honors, including, posthumously, the highest U.S. civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. — Albert Bandura, Moral Disengagement, 2782
