Signal-adaptive matrix steering works only for single moving images
Evidence
Various forms of signal-adaptive “steering” were devised to deliver more convincing directional illusions during the playback process. There was SQ from CBS, QS from Sansui, E-V from ElectroVoice and others. Peter Scheiber figures prominently as a pioneer in matrix design, with his patented encoder and decoder ideas being incorporated into many of the systems. The best of these systems were remarkably good in creating the illusion of completely separate, or discrete, channels when a single image was panned around the room. However, this clear separation breaks down when there is a demand for several simultaneously occurring discrete images. In the limit, the steering ceases and we listen through the raw matrix, with its generous crosstalk leakage. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 755

- QUESTION: The single-image limitation of steering matrices is a concrete boundary condition worth contrasting with modern object-based audio rendering.
