Short-term anti-Islamophobia tactics must not undercut long-term structural change

Evidence

Dare to question and to address the differences on key issues with Muslims if and when they exist. “These questions,” Ramadan maintains, “signal that you are supportive of Muslims who are victims of discrimination but also that your support is not a blind support for everything.” Both Ramadan and Francois-Cerrah take to heart one of the more common criticisms of the concept of Islamophobia discussed in chapter 1, that calling attention to Islamophobia has the potential to stifle legitimate criticisms of Muslims and Islam. Their response is that non-Muslims can fight Islamophobia without abandoning a critical engagement with Muslims. — Green, Todd H, The Fear of Islam_ An Introduction to…, 696 (#corroborates, via linked claim)

Increasingly, opponents of anti-Muslim ideologues are realizing that the most effective way to defend Muslims and Islam is to insist that all public debate conform to the same ground rules that apply to discussions of Jews and Christians. … No attempt was made to defend or even to explain Islamic belief and practice, much less “honor killings.” The object of critique was not a specific misrepresentation of Islam, but ignorance, racism, bigotry, and cynical attempts to mobilize the right-wing base of the Republican Party. — Carl W. In order for Muslims and Arabs to combat Islamophobia, certain actions must be performed. Effective efforts must be taken to assist non-Muslims in understanding accurate Islamic teachings, especially those pertaining to tolerance and peace. First and foremost, we need to promote communication and embrace and respect those who have diverse cultural and religious beliefs. It should not be understated that embracing diversity leads to a more accepting and culturally diverse community rather than a racist one. Additionally, open discussions have to be promoted in order to facilitate the exchange of differing viewpoints and reveal the complexity of the problem. — Muhammad Asad Latif, The Identity of Religion Always Comes Up, 141 (#corroborates, via linked claim)
