Shirley Clarke and Jack Smith replaced the censored film within one production cycle.
Evidence
While The Cool World would earn Clarke the best reviews of her career, the contretemps over The Connection was soon eclipsed by the excitement around and subsequent scandal of Jack Smith’s raw, orgiastic Flaming Creatures, shot on the rooftop of a defunct Lower East Side movie house during that past summer and fall (and featuring several Living Theatre performers, Malina among them). The Connection purported to show a subculture; Flaming Creatures emerged from one, heralded by a manifesto in the winter 1962/63 issue of Film Culture, Smith’s essay “The Perfect Film Appositeness of Maria Montez.” — J.
