Shared social forces, not imitation, drove many liberation movements

Evidence

The civil rights movement was about black liberation, but in the end, it was only one of a whole series of liberation movements. It helped influence all of these movements—very notably, the feminist movement; also the liberation movements of Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, the so-called sexual minorities, old people, prisoners, deaf people, and people in wheelchairs— almost everybody with a grievance against the majority, or who felt they did not have a place at the table of society. Perhaps “influence” is not the right word. Rather, the same social forces that created the civil rights movement were at work on other identity groups. — Lawrence M. Friedman, A History of American Law, 3944
