Seventeenth-century libraries shifted from lecterns to wall shelving
Evidence
Libraries throughout Europe abandoned the basic fittings of the medieval college and church libraries, dominated by reading lecterns and low central bookcases. Instead they remodelled library rooms to resemble great halls, in which books were placed, spines out, in great vertical bookcases along the walls. β Andrew Pettegree, Arthur der Weduwen, The Library- A Fragile History, 488
