Sensorineural hearing loss disrupts some temporal abilities but not others, with wide individual variability
Evidence
Ultimately, though, the prevailing consensus is that when temporal processing is measured by gap detection and amplitude modulation detection, many listeners with sensorineural hearing loss do not have degraded temporal processing. In other cases, such as forward masking and temporal integration, hearing loss indeed disrupts the temporal representation of sounds. The studies discussed in this section also have demonstrated huge variability in abilities within the group of listeners with hearing loss. Thus, we should avoid making general, sweeping statements about the temporal processing abilities of listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. Such variability stresses the importance of making measurements in individual listeners. — Jennifer Lentz, Psychoacoustics- Perception of Normal…, 1081
