Senegal outpaced the Sudan in colonial schooling per capita

Evidence

According to this report, Senegal (pop. I,25o,ooo) led the federation in education: 4,500 students in 48 schools, 40 French teachers and 6o African ones. The Sudan, in contrast, with a total population four times that of Senegal (pop. 5,ooo,ooo), had an enrollment of 3,ooo students and a teaching staff of 30 French and 28 African instructors. This great discrepancy is partially explained by the fact that more than half of the schools in Senegal were located within the Four Communes. — Alice L.
