School vouchers originated as subsidies for segregated white religious academies
Evidence
In the aftermath of the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954, as we saw in chapter three, white Americans in the South organized massive resistance against federal orders to desegregate schools. While some districts shut down public schools altogether, others promoted “segregation academies” for white students, often with religious programming, to be subsidized with tuition grants and voucher schemes. Today vouchers remain popular with supporters of religious schools, many of whom see public education as inherently secular and corrupt. — Katherine Stewart, The Power Worshippers, 752
Categorization
- XREF: Connects to the book’s own ch3 material summarized in book_so_far on racist/religious ‘massive resistance’ against desegregation; also evokes the standing ADDENDUM on sacrifice/ritual and segregation-era politicking less directly. — connects to: Charters became the privately regulated route to the same privatization vouchers promised — Katherine Stewart, The Power Worshippers: Inside the…, 768; Segregation’s school costs motivated whites to drive black families away; Outlawing explicit race measures resegregates schools through residential sorting — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race: Reflections on…, 394 (+6 more)
- ADDENDUM: Complements the ‘Grafting & Growth’ trees article only loosely — the real resonance is with ch2/ch3 segregation-history claims in this same book.
