School reports publicized black families’ sacrifices to counter northern indolence stereotypes

Evidence

Rice learned to extol the virtue of the sacrifice of black mothers who made tremendous sacrifices to defray tuition costs. One poor mother, Rice related, received four dollars a month as wages, and yet she gave it all to Spelman for her daughter’s education. Rice counseled her northern sisters to refrain from negative stereotypes: It is the impression of some in the North, that the colored people are indolent, and do not help themselves as much as they might. How many of our white people in the North, earning four dollars a month, would give the entire sum to educate a child? — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 515
