Savarkar coined the term Hindutva in a 1923 pamphlet
Evidence
The term was coined by V.D. Savarkar (1883–1966), one of the principal proponents of modern, right-wing Hindu nationalism, in his 1923 pamphlet Essentials of Hindutva (later retitled Hindutva: Who Is a Hindu?). The first edition (1923) of this work carried the pseudonymous “A Maratha” as author. — Ambedkar, B R, Annihilation of Caste_ The Annotated…, 509
Categorization
- DEFINE: Pinpoints the origin and dating of Hindutva as a coined term and its eponymous text.
- SHARE: For a friend working on Indian nationalism — the detail that Savarkar first published the foundational Hindutva pamphlet pseudonymously as ‘A Maratha’ is a sharp archival nicety.
