Sasanian Gondishapur surpassed all contemporaneous institutions in cross-cultural scholarly openness.
Evidence
The Academy of Gondishapur was, by 570 CE, a multi-cultural intellectual community that was operating at a higher level of cross-cultural openness than any contemporaneous institution in the Eastern Roman Empire, the Latin West, or the broader Christian world. Greek-Christian Constantinople, in Justinian’s wake, was closing intellectual options (the Athens closure of 529 was symptomatic of broader Eastern Roman intellectual narrowing). The Latin West, post-Justinian, was operating at a substantially lower level of intellectual organization than any of these other regions. Sasanian Gondishapur, alone in its moment, was bringing Greek, Syriac, Persian, and Indian scholars together in one walled compound and funding their work. — , The Rod and the Child, 1767
